Free Genealogy Programs for your computer

  • PhpGedView. PhpGedView parses GEDCOM 5.5 genealogy files and displays them on the internet in formats and charts that you are familiar with. It also allows relatives to edit their genealogy online and collaborate together on their research. Read more about it here. Download it here.
  • GeneWeb. GeneWeb is a free Windows, Macintosh and Linux genealogy program from France that is often referred to as an “Internet genealogy program.” Indeed, you do everything from Netscape, Internet Explorer, or a similar Web browser. Read more about it here. Download it here.
  • GenealogyJ. GenealogyJ is a viewer and editor for genealogy data. It works in Windows, Macintosh OS X, Linux, and Solaris operating systems. It will even work on a web server, allowing you to build a viewer program into your genealogy home page. Read more about it here. Download it here.
  • Personal Ancestral File. PAF is quite popular and widely used. The program is produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It’s a fairly basic and easy to use package, making it an excellent first choice for the new genealogist. You won’t be able to publish a book with it, or create large multimedia files.
