The developers of RSSFWD have pulled up their tent stakes and moved on.

The service is no longer in operation. Sadly, even though love may make the world go ’round, money greases the wheel. And RSSFWD developers weren’t generating any money on a free service, and they were just overwhelmed.

This is an update to a post I did last year about using SimplePie as a standalone entity in Drupal.

Why would you want to do that?

Well, modules that use SimplePie as part of their coding reconfigure it to make it work with their module. Some even publish feed items as nodes – and that’s fine if that’s what you want to do.

But what if you just want to put a simple feed in a block or a page without all the baggage from a module? Sorry, folks, those modules won’t help you do that. Their sole reason for existence is to take SimplePie and mold it into their code – not use SimplePie by itself.

If you’re updating to the latest version of the PhpGedView genealogy program, currently at version 4.1.5 as of this writing, you’ll find that your RSS feed is corrupted.

That’s because the new version of the “functions_rss.php” file (found in the “includes” folder) has a bug that generates a weird error report when running PhpGedView’s RSS through your server.

To fix this bug, delete this file and replace it with the file of the same name from your previous version of PhPGedView.

RSS Forward, abbreviated RSSFWD, is an online service that forwards an e-mail each time your favorite web site updates its RSS feed. The service is free. Just enter the address of the web site you want updates from, then enter your e-mail adresss, preview the feed and then subscribe. Once you subscribe, you’ll be sent an e-mail detailing new RSS content on your favorite site or sites.
