SpringWidgets: Create your own RSS Widget

in: RSS

One of the more innovative on-line RSS creation tools, SpringWidgets offers an easy way for you to include any RSS feed onto your own web site.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to follow the instructions on the site, and you can create your feed, using a variety of available templates (or you can make your own). All you have to do is include the code for the widget onto your web or blog page.

Below is an example of the widget in action. The feed used is from Slashdot. And yes, you can use the scrollbar in the widget to scroll up or down.

The code used is based on flash, and unless you have web design and the resultant coding experience, you shouldn’t try to place it EXACTLY. The code doesn’t like to be messed with. The best location would be somewhere in the left or right column of your page.

If you DO want to place it exactly on a section of your page, I would recommend putting any text you want to see around it on the page first, and then add the code as a last step in finishing the area you want to lay out. If you try to edit text around it after you’ve placed in on the page, you’re going to see TWO widget boxes — one blank, and one with the feed inside.

To reiterate:

1, Don’t mess with the code once it is placed. Get your surrounding text in order BEFORE you place the code on the page.

2. Don’t change text in the area surrounding it later; otherwise you’ll get the double-box effect. The way to cure that, of course, is to make the changes you want and then paste the code for the widget back into your document.

Yes, the placement of this code is tricky, and a pain in the arse. But, it’s fun, and it will work on your web page or blog — just follow the guidelines above.
